Is our region creating apartment demand?

Net Washington driver's licensesOne useful indicator of potential apartment demand is the change in the number of people with driver's licenses in the state.

Granted, it doesn't directly translate into housing demand, but because this information is available monthly, it's a lot more useful than census data. The graph shows the latest driver's license data on a 12 month moving sum.

Close to 80,000 driver's licenses have been added in the past year, after deducting relinquished licenses from Washington residents who moved out of state. That's not close to the peak level, but it's also not close to the low point.
